  • Part of the appeal of The Elder Scrolls: Legends is simple brand recognition. Fortunately, each expansion has made Legends look a bit more distinctive. Then again, that expansion also gave us Prized Chicken, which summons a full lane of Angry Villagers when destroyed. Here’s a small gallery of art from Legends’ current cards. I apologize if the Silt Strider makes you reinstall Morrowind and go hunting for mods that make it look as good as this.

  • This one flew under the radar when it was announced several days back, but in case you also missed it, the Mooncrash expansion for Prey received a free update called Rogue Moon. It’s a tribute to some of Arkane’s favorite games in the indie roguelike/roguelite/general permadeath space, adding new operator skins themed on Darkest Dungeon, Dead Cells, Spelunky, Don’t Starve, Rogue Legacy, and Risk of Rain. In a nice touch they’ve also shared a blog post in which members of the team talk about each

  • There’s a new Leisure Suit Larry game subtitled Wet Dreams Don’t Dry currently on the way via CrazyBunch and Assemble Entertainment, who call it “a direct sequel to the first Leisure Suit Larry game”. It catapults Larry direct from 1987 to the modern day, though that doesn’t explain why he’s taller now or what happened to his voice. Seeing (and hearing) it in motion hasn’t done much to get my hopes up for this one. In response to an email from a fan Lowe said, “if that title is the best they cou

  • Paratopic is an indie first-person horror game that launched on itch.io earlier this year. You play as three characters—a smuggler, an assassin, and a birdwatcher—in strange adventure game vignettes. Sometimes you’re trying to secret a VHS tape across the border, sometimes you’re driving through the night, sometimes you’re clicking on objects just to see what they’re animated to do. Paratopic’s new definitive cut adds a couple of new areas to discover, more dialogue, and more interactable stuff.

  • Turn-based Viking survival game Dead in Vinland, which Jody “couldn’t stop playing” despite its flaws, will get its first DLC and a free new mode on September 19, developer CCCP has announced. The DLC is called Vallhund, and it’ll let you recruit a new Norse dog companion to your camp. Alongside the paid DLC, CCCP will release a new, free game mode focused on exploration and make more minor gameplay tweaks, including giving enemies random traits. It promised more details on its devblog soon. The

  • Rocksteady Studios, developer of three Batman: Arkham games (Asylum, City and Knight) has kept quiet about what it’s working on next—but new job postings suggest that it might announce its new game soon. It posted multiple new job listings on its website this week, all pointing towards a new AAA title. The most telling is its listing for a community manager, a temporary role that will promote a “highly anticipated upcoming AAA title”. One, for a QA tester, is for a two-year contract that will in

  • Wandersong, a cutesy indie adventure about a bard who sings to stop the end of the world, was on our January list of 2018 indie games we were most excited about, and now it has a release date: September 27. You’ll have a wheel of notes to choose from at any time, and different things will respond to your tunes in different ways. You’ll break up a bar brawl, navigate a ship through rough waters, battle a giant snow monster and banish a ghost, working out the right notes to hit each time. It’s won

  • Side-scrolling steampunk shooter Steel Empire is coming to PC next week, more than 25 years after it first appeared on the Sega Mega Drive. The PC version will launch on Steam on Thursday, and it’ll be based on the 2014 3DS port. Publisher Teyon says it’ll have “improved graphics and controls” along with full controller and Steam achievement support. It doesn’t give any more specifics on the visual changes, or what resolutions it’ll run at. No word on the price yet, but keep an eye on the Steam

  • Double Damage Games has announced Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, a space combat sim that’s a “sort-of-prequel” to Rebel Galaxy, which Chris thought was fun, if a little too repetitive. She’ll take on contracts, buy new ship parts, customise her craft and meet plenty of weird and wonderful characters. You’ll also play lots of minigames, including pool and dice poker—skip to 15:00 to watch Baldree have a gamble. You can play for money or ship parts, and the minigames will also come up in the main story. The

  • Likewise, when we’re playing a Tomb Raider game nobody says, “That guy shot Lara Croft”, we say, “You shot me!” There’s a community of cosplayers who specialize in portraying Lara Croft, even adopting her surname on social media. Saylum Croft and Raymond Croft were two of those ambassadors this year and, to get the obvious out of the way, Raymond does not look like the traditional Lara. “I met plenty of people who were so happy to see a male cosplaying as Lara, especially at an official Tomb Rai

Announced just yesterday, Pandemic: Fall of Rome is the latest, and the first that’s looking to blend the game’s mechanics with a more traditional wargame. • When he reviewed Hand of Fate 2 for us back in November, Eric Watson had plenty of praise for the solo card game that’s also an action-RPG. That’s set to change with the latest update, which developers Defiant are calling “Combat reforged”. Among its changes are improvements to responsiveness, “addressing a number of issues from sticky animation transitions to unreliable dodge vulnerability.” It also stops weapon charges from resetting during combat, ensuring Apprentice players are able to acces

  • Enderal is a total conversion mod for Skyrim by German team SureAI, released in English in 2016. Originally, it had to be downloaded from SureAI’s servers and installed over the top of Skyrim, meaning that it was impossible to switch between Enderal and Skyrim without reinstalling. That’s set to change now that Enderal has its own Steam page. As the mod makers put it, “Enderal will have a completely standalone game and save game directory, so that the installation will no longer interfere with y

  • The Surge was a generic, half-decent sci-fi combat game that Jody described as “Dark Souls in a junkyard” in his review. Deck13 tried to liven up the bland setting with a theme park-themed DLC last year, and next month it’ll launch a new expansion, The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented, which is similarly out of left field. The Western-themed DLC will arrive on October 2. Basically, it’s an excuse for more hacking and slashing, but instead of hopping over piles of steel and wire you’ll be ducking
