  • Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality isn’t just for playing VR games—it’s a platform for using applications with both VR and AR environments. Until now, you could only run UWP apps from the Microsoft Store in Mixed Reality, but that is finally changing. The latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build includes support for running traditional Win32 desktop programs inside of Mixed Reality. “In this update, we added the ability to launch Desktop (Win32) applications (such as Spotify, Paint.NET, and Visual

  • “Kholat,” we said a few years ago, “is Dear Esther meets Sean Bean,” and based on that alone you already know whether you want to play it or not. I have good news if you do: It’s free, for keeps, until the end of the week. Today is the 60th anniversary of the tragedy at the #Dyatlov Pass. Also today Kholat will be available for free for all Steam users till the end of week! The main plot is buttressed by secrets and hidden details, and yes, the whole thing is narrated by Sean Bean.

  • Last week’s VIP demo for Anthem didn’t make many of us feel like VIPs. But this week, things are going much better for Anthem’s public demo. Players on Reddit are reporting the infinite loading screen is still around for a select few, components of the sound mix going silent, sporadic freezes, missing light nodes during certain missions, and more. We’ve played quite a bit of Anthem, so if you have lingering questions, we’ve probably addressed them somewhere in our recent coverage. BioWare still

  • Lead producer Ben Irving said more about that today on Reddit, where he ran down some of the changes in the aiming and flight controls that BioWare is working on. Raw mouse input can now be used for flight by setting the flight/swim response and precision sliders to 0 percent, and default flight and swim sensitivity settings have been tweaked as well. Flight/swim response and precision default settings and curves have also been tuned. (I’m totally onboard with James: Hossing Javelins around in t

  • “How many Warhammer games are enough?” We played eight of the best, and nine of the worst, and there’s still room in between for plenty more. That great, long list is now one game longer, thanks to the arrival of Warhammer Quest 2: The End Times on Steam. It is not, as I briefly suspected when I first saw the announcement, a dollar-store knockoff of Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide, but rather a turn-based strategy game based on the Warhammer Quest board game that sets players off against the f

  • It’s fun to watch other people risk their hardware in such a manner, though, and it didn’t take long for professional overclocker Der8auer to give Intel’s beastly 28-core/56-thread Xeon W-3175X processor the delidding treatment. The Xeon W-3175X is not an inexpensive part. In any event, it’s interesting to see Der8auer go through the process of removing the integrated heatspreader (IHS) from the Xeon W-3175X, which you can watch for yourself in the video above. • Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which debuted on consoles a couple of weeks ago, is now available on Steam, along with a new trailer showcasing high-flying gameplay and a few of the accolades it’s received since the console versions came out. Some workarounds have been posted to the Ace Combat subreddit, and the development team indicated on Twitter that it’s aware of the issues with joysticks and looking into it. At the same time, Ace Combat 7 is not a DCS production: It’s an arcade-style yank-and

The discounts aren’t quite as good outside the United States, but there are still a few noteworthy items. In the UK, Far Cry 5 is £17.00 (£33 off), Rainbow Six Siege is £8.37 (£4.12 off), and Assassin’s Creed: Origins is £16.50 (£33 off). • MSI has gone and gutted its Infinity X gaming desktop and replaced the previous generation internals with some of the fastest components money can buy. Namely, the newest version of the Infinity X pairs the best gaming processor, a Core i9-9900K, with the best graphics card for gaming, a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. If you go shopping for one, be aware that there are two main models, the Infinity X 9th and Infinity X 9th Plus. It’s an interesting design, though we haven’t spent any hands-on time with th

  • Intel continues to hype its efforts in graphics as it gets ready to introduce its first modern discrete GPU in 2020. Intel graphics boss Raja Koduri laid out his vision for the future, which includes “photorealistic immersive worlds” and “games with virtual worlds that are as large as this entire universe.” And it’s not my expectation that that’s going to happen immediately with the Intel GPU. It will also be interesting to see how ambitious Intel is, in terms of cramming features into its initi

  • Ape Out, the vaguely Hotline Miami-like game about an ape who wants out, has been delayed slightly. In December of last year it was slated for release on February 7 of this year, but today publisher Devolver Digital said that the big monkey won’t actually make the break until February 28. It sounds like the delay is related primarily to the Switch version of the game. • Spinnortality is the second just-released cyberpunk game I’ve written about today, but it’s coming at the setting from a very different angle than Re-Legion. Instead of taking down corps and sowing chaos, this sinister management game is all about ruining the world as one of those corps. Create products, get people hooked on them, build your own workforce, manipulate governments, spread fake news, spur on riots—it sounds like there are plenty of ways to make the world a really, really awful plac

  • Anthem’s public demo kicks off today, running for the weekend. Despite the numerous issues that plagued the VIP demo, BioWare reckons this one is going to go a lot more smoothly, though players should still be prepared for new and returning issues. The Anthem team has been working on improving the player experience based on feedback and what they saw during the last demo weekend. “Like last weekend, we will be prepared with more server capacity than we anticipate will be needed,” the post reads.

  • Image via Ryan ScottThe thing that made GFW Radio magical is that, at first, nobody wanted to do it. Conceptually, GFW Radio (or 97.5 The Brodeo) was supposed to be an audio commentary for the news and features the staff was putting on a website every week. At the time, GFW Radio was the only games podcast that reflected that. GFW Radio only worked while GFW itself still existed. Thanks to fans, you can find the entire run of GFW Radio collected on the Internet Archive.

  • Alien penguins, too! The trailer announces the start of Early Access, so you can go for a swim in the standalone expansion right now. Instead of a survivor from a spaceship disaster, you’re a scientist studying the alien world’s artefacts. Subnautica was the best survival game of 2018, so I’ve got high hopes for Below Zero. Subnautica: Below Zero is out now on Steam, Discord and the Epic Games Store for £15.49/$20.

The developer has also revealed that owners of Steel Division: Normandy 44 will get exclusive divisions drawn from the original game. The Back to War pack’s exclusive units include the Sherman Jumbo tank, Long Tom 144 mm howitzer, Panzer III N, Do 217 Bombing plane and 350 others, split into eight divisions. • Intel launches its most powerful processor to date with 28 unlocked coresIt’s been an interesting year for Intel, and in some respects, a challenging one. The newest Xeon chip is a monster processor with 28 physical cores and 56 threads to throw at workloads. That said, the Xeon W-3175X could end up in systems that are used to create and render games. “With the most cores and threads, CPU PCIe lanes, and memory capacity of any Intel desktop processor, the Intel Xeon W-3175X processor has the fea

Unfortunately, the spectre of exclusivity has once again appeared, as it has been doing a lot recently, restricting it to PS4 when it launches in mid-February. “Given these changes to the League Play structure, we’re taking a few extra weeks to implement and test the new changes, and the launch of the World League Hub and League Play is now slated for our next maj

The returning issues include heavy bobby pins—that should explain why you might log in and find yourself unexpectedly over encumbered—as well as the item duplication bug, originally fixed by Fallout 76’s last patch of 2018.
