  • We were pretty excited about American folk-tale travelogue Where the Water Tastes Like Wine when we first heard about it, but upon release our reviewer Tyler Wilde was moderate in his praise: “It tells over 200 tiny tales, and several bigger ones, at an agonizingly slow pace. There’s truth to find within its choppy transcontinental trek, but it comes at the expense of sore eyes.” As well as modifying the way travel works, and catching a few bugs, this patch adds to the trove of tales you’ll find

  • State of Decay 2, the new zombie apocalypse survival simulator from Undead Labs and Microsoft, has just been updated to version 1.2 with a hefty 20GB patch. You can read full patch notes on the official website. According to studio head Jeff Strain, “This patch today is just the beginning — we have big plans for State of Decay 2, and we’re humbled and appreciative to you for giving us the opportunity to make those big plans happen.” Our reviewer Tom Hatfield enjoyed State of Decay 2, but did run

  • On March 22 one of Steam’s regular updates was rolled out, complete with fixes to the in-game overlay and problems involving corrupt items on the Steam Workshop. It also dealt with a bug that made it possible for someone to get access to the computer of anyone with Steam run code remotely, effectively taking over their computer. What that means is that, as he demonstrated in the video below, he could hijack a computer and run software remotely. In this test case it was just a calculator app, but

  • Remember Evolve, the 4v1 multiplayer shooter about hunting down giant, human-controlled monsters? Player numbers dwindled soon after its 2015 release, and later that year developer Turtle Rock Studios ended support for the game. In September, dedicated servers will stop running, which means no more ranked play, no more leaderboards, and no more in-game store. At the same time, Evolve Stage 2—the free-to-play branch of the game—will shut down entirely. While Evolve won’t be fully dead, it’ll be o

  • Fallout: New California is a massive New Vegas mod that’s been in development since 2013—and now it finally has a release date. It’ll be out on October 23, and will offer a brand new story with 12 endings and 16,000 lines of voiced dialogue. The main quest, which is essentially a prequel to New Vegas, is complete and the art is finished, but the team are still working on side quests. Still, I wouldn’t say no to another chunky Fallout main quest. It’ll be available on Nexus Mods, and the team are

  • Path of Exile’s Incursion league, which Steven spoke to the developers about in length last month, is now live. Incursion has you hunt down Atzoatl, an ancient Vaal treasure temple. The time-bending twist is that your actions during your 11 incursions into the past will change that final temple dungeon run. But reaching the original poison room netted him a shield that you can’t find anywhere else. The Incursion league will run for three months.

  • Turns out, a vampire story can be plenty scary, as everyone who’s played through the Ocean House Hotel will tell you. At this point in Bloodlines you’re a fledgling, getting used to your abilities and being bossed around by established undead. But the Ocean House Hotel is an inspired bit of spooky design—especially the sound. When the Ocean House Hotel starts throwing vases and blowing up lightbulbs as you pass, it shouldn’t be a big deal. The Ocean House Hotel stands out though, a high point of

It’ll cost $29.99 on Steam, and it’ll come with four game modes: Push, Firefight, and Capture the Base for versus play, plus Checkpoint for co-op. All but Capture the Base featured in the first game. • I was really looking forward to Murderous Pursuits, the PvP assassination game about trying to blend in with a crowd of NPCs. It’s the spiritual successor to The Ship, which I loved, and shares some of the same developers. Also, if you buy the game at Green Man Gaming this weekend you’ll get a free extra copy to give to a friend, which might help pad the player count. The developers released a road map last month laying out the future updates, which you can view below. Essentially, the plan is t

  • To reiterate, then: which game series burned you out? I really, really loved the chaos and destruction of Just Cause 1 and 2 but it tended to be a bit mindless—which is great! I know I probably would have enjoyed it for a few hours, but couldn’t imagine I’d really get deep into it. It’s the same convoluted Resident Evil nonsense I’d been hoping the series had left behind for good. MM6: Mandate of Heaven was the last game in the series I played more than a few hours, and I never even tried MM8 th

  • This was originally published in Edge 309 in July 2017, and is republished here with the Edge team’s permission. For that game, Dallas hoped to create a sense of awe and wonder; this time he was hoping to evoke “the sublime horror of nature”. Nature’s sublime horror suddenly had a comedic edge, and the story of young Molly Finch – the first of this familial anthology – gradually took shape. “It was just about making sure that it was handled with the [appropriate] gravity and that it was respectf

In May, several developers and publishers—including Lupiesoft, HunieDev, and MangaGamer—said that Valve informed them their games would be removed from Steam unless sexual content was censored. Most eroge games on Steam are already heavily censored to fall in line with Valve’s community standards. John Pickett, MangaGamerTaosym admitted that a potential cra

  • It’s the PC Gamer Indie zine , our one-off homage to photocopied fanzines and the passion that drives them. Indie games should be talked about in slick full-color of course, but their defiantly amateurish and gleefully trashy side deserves love too. I also had a lot of fun sneaking in various PC Gamer references and running gags. It’s silly and heartfelt and it feels like a fitting goodbye from me to the Indie channel, but I’ll save being maudlin for the Lows. Tom Senior: Kharaking good timeThis

  • Bursting into gaming in 2008 with Dominion, the deckbuilding genre has grown wildly in the past decade, eclipsing any expectations one might have had at the time. Deckbuilders take the nominally out-of-game mechanic of competitive card games, building your deck, and make it the focus of the game itself. We’re now in the era of the rising roguelike deck builder with wonderful games like Slay the Spire. Revisiting Ascension helped me realize how varied the deckbuilding genre had become, and it let
